Another year, another birthday

Yan turned four last Sunday.
At the rate time is flying past, my babies will be all grown up and leaving the nest sooner than I am prepared for. I had better enjoyed their company while they still let me.

Hide-and-Seek

I was the seeker in a hide-and-seek game with the girls. After I finished counting, I turned around, only to see Yan with her head buried in the bag hanging by the side. She had thought that "if I can't see mummy, then mummy wouldn't be able to see me!"

Rui and I had a good laugh.

Monopoly

Rui got a monopoly set for her Xmas from us and she is loving the game...for the moment. Not sure how long this enthusiasm will last but the game surely helps her in her calculations and her money sense- important skills for the coming P1 life!

Our very first Christmas Tree

Our reasons for never having a Christmas tree have been
1. that we are not Christians
2. that the tree is troublesome to put up and to take down

This year though, after Yan's relentless request to have one, we caved in.

We bought ours at Carrefour, and together with all the decorative materials, the bill came up to $115. Not as expensive as we had thought it would be.

We put it up as soon as we got home and it was really quite fun. Rui, especially enjoyed the decorating process while Yan refused to help as it was too "itchy". The end product was, a beautiful, blinking christmas tree.

P1 Orientation

Today is Rui's P1 orientation at CHIJ SNGS.

We reached the school bright and early. After signing Rui in, she was escorted to join her future classmates and teachers while the parents moved to the hall for several talks.

When we were there, I bumped into many ex-SNGS friends whose daughters are also enrolled in SNGS. 3 of them are in the same class as Rui! It felt like "homecoming" for the mummies.

Later, Rui told us she enjoyed her first day in the new school, although she had panicked and teared when we didn't pick her up on time. I think I enjoyed my first P1 orientation too. : )

Universal Studio Singapore

My sis had free entry pass for one child to USS due to her company family day so we decided we should all head out to the amusement park to enjoy the rides.

The park was a tad small and there were limited rides. The huge turnout made waiting time pretty long, some as long as 90minutes! We managed to try out all those that we would have liked to, e.g. Enchanted Airways (roller coaster safe enough for children), the Mummy Returns (most exciting ride) and even caught the Shrek 4-D show 3 times!

Graduation Speech

Year End Concert

In the blink of an eye, Rui has progressed from a toddler performing her first concert item in N1 to a seasoned performer and even emcee at her graduating concert this year. She wore her graduation gown and mortar board, and delivered her graduation speech like a pro. She is all grown up.

Yan, too, had her share of limelight, performing in 2 dance items with no hiccups.

The most important thing was, the 2 girls totally enjoyed their performing experience.

And so we are 2 proud parents.

Baking Party

We went to the same baking party as Aunt V and the boys.

I think this baking party is a SUPERB idea. I had so much fun watching the kids bake so the kids must be enjoying it even more! The product was yummy chocolate cupcakes which we think can rival any of those from the bakeries.

The buffet spread was fine too, consisting of stir fried angel hair spaghetti (my favourite), mini cheescake, mini burgers, fries. There was also free flow of orange juice, tea and coffee.

I am going to sign my girls up for more baking classes.

Bukit Timah Hill

We did it! We made it to the top of Bukit Timah Hill.

We trudged through the forestation, dragged our tired bodies up the irregular carved out steps and braved through the slight haze that was still lingering in the air. The 2 girls got tired and started whining but followed along nevertheless. It didn't help that they were hungry but couldn't eat anything as we were worried the monkeys would snatch the food from us!

It was quite an accomplishment, given that the hill stands at 164m tall and is the tallest hill in Singapore.

Three Cheers!

Bar Bar Black Sheep

Ben and I went to check out Bar Bar Black Sheep at Robertson Quay last Wed evening.

The place is actually a "high-class" coffee shop in our opinion. The food was alright but sitting by the canal and people watching can be quite fun, especially for parents like us who are deprived of a nightout without the kids.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

After our exciting hike on the Wallace Trail last weekend, we are tempted to go hiking again.

This time, we ventured on to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. There were a couple of trails to try out but as we had gotten there rather late (10+am) we decided to try a simpler one for a start.

The boardwalk we got on led us to a very interesting playground, crafted out of wood and designed to fit nicely into the natural environment. There were the usual slides and swings that we are used to seeing as well as climbing structures that the public can get to try on. There was also a flying fox structure!

We trekked through the forest to get to a rope bridge. As it had rained earlier, it was rather slippery and we crossed it gingerly. We were really glad we made it to the other side.

We will return. The next time, we will check out the other forest trails.

Good Cook IV

We are fortunate to have a helper who is has good culinary skills and is interested to try out new dishes.

Yesterday, we got a taste of her mee siam. She claimed it was her first time trying it out. The verdict was - simply sedap!

POSB Kids Run

Aunt V has a post on the same topic.

Mine will be about how whiny Yan was during the run. She started off fine, even tried to run a little. And then, the heat got into her and she started complaining that it is too hot, too sweaty and that she wants to sit down! I had to half-drag-half-carry her to the finish line. Afterwards, I asked if she wants to do it again next time and she actually replied yes! It's a no no no from me though.

Rui, on the other hand, enjoyed her run thoroughly. It helped that she had Shyan running with her.

I noticed many parents were able to run alongside their children even though they had no T-shirts and bibs. And we had thought we had to buy a bib to run together with our girls. Why the inconsistency?

I, Robot II

The last time they made a robot together. This time, it is a helicopter.

Penang 2010

We spent the Hari Raya Puasa long weekend at Penang. It was planned as a suprise trip for Ben's birthday and coincidentally, Uncle Sow Liang and family were heading back to their Penang hometown during the same weekend. They played good host, bringing us around the island, savouring all the Penang good food (char kway teow, authentic chendol, lor bak etc) and showing us the famous pasar malam. We had also wanted to take the famous Penang ferry across the sea to the mainland where Butterworth is but the Penang bridge had earlier caught fire and traffic was at a standstill there. At my request, we had dinner at Hao Yu Seafood, which is a dinghy little eating outlet by the sea, with a reputation for serving delectable seafood at very reasonable prices. The food was fine, in my opinion, but not fantastic to justify the rave reviews given out on that place.

The children were thrilled to see one another again. They had loads of fun at the hotel adventure zone and Batu Ferringhi which was right at the hotel's doorstep. The adventure zone had 3 huge slides that even the adults feared to attempt. One of them was practically a vertical drop. I shuddered as I looked down from the top. Not for the faint-36-year-old heart.

Despite us missing our flight back (we got onto a transit flight and only got back 3 hours later), we had a blast. All thanks to good food, good fun and good company!

Art Gallery

These are the 7 crayon pieces that Rui has produced since she started her art class at the CC. Which is your favourite?

I, Robot

They started putting together the Star Wars Robot lego set recently. It has been a couple of years since Ben bought it for himself.

Having no interest in such things, I only watched from the side. Surprisingly, Rui seems to enjoy helping the father. She apparently was responsible for the robotic arms!

Mid-Life Crisis

I really believe that mid life crises exist.

When you reach a certain age and a certain stage of your life, and you realise you have probably reached the half-way mark of your life span, you will start to think about doing things that you have always wanted to try but have never got around to do it because of all the procrastination. It's always because you were busy with work, family, friends etc previously.

Recently I hit mine (I believe). I decided I will stop talking about wanting to learn to play the guitar and instead really go learn it. So I enrolled in an elementary pop guitar class and I totally am enjoying it.

I can now play (very slowly) some songs and sing to them. Songs like Stand by Me, I'm yours, 关怀方式. It's a long time dream come true!

When I am ready, I will post some of my playing videos here. : )

Family education on race, culture and ethinicity II

In Feb this year, we visited the mosque. The blog post is here.

Today, we visited the first Hindu temple built in Singapore, Sri Mariamman Temple. It was built in 1827 and building it was quite an accomplishment at that time, with little technology, especially its very interesting entrance.

Yan asked me why some of the Hindu Gods are blue. I was stumped! I googled later and found out that the blue colour is supposed to represent the all-pervasive nature of the god. The blue colour represents the colour of the infinite space and infinite ocean that the god resides upon.

There is much to be learnt, just by walking around Singapore.

Friends in KL

On our way back from Ipoh, we made a 1-day stopover at KL to visit Uncle Sow and his family. From the looks of the pictures, the kids enjoyed one another's company tremendously. We heard from Aunt Lorna that Megan was so sad after we left that she cried to sleep.

No worries Megan. We promise to meet up again soon!

Pedicure

I went for my monthly pedicure last night. Yan decided she wanted one too.

Julian and Yan

The 2 good buddies share a reading moment..

Istana Open House

I have very vague memories of having visited the Istana when I was very young. Now, many years later, we returned to the place again.

Despite the heat, the children had fun at the playground, climbing trees, visiting the presidential residence. We were awed by the size of the Istana.

Finally...Merly and Lyo

We finally met up with the 2 YOG mascots!

YOG torch relay

Singapore has the privilege of hosting the inaugural YOG this year.

And we are fortunate enough to be living in an estate where the torch relay will pass by.

So at 3pm this afternoon, we took our only Singapore flag, camera and headed to the main road where the torch relay team will pass by and waited. It was a good 30minute wait but it was well worth it. How often does one get to witness the passing of an Olympic torch?

Residents nearby had turned out in droves to witness this significant moment. The position we were standing at was excellent as the torch was strategically passed from one bearer to another right next to us! Great camera moment!

X-periment!

There is a Science Exhibition going on at Marina Square, in conjuction with the Science Festival. We went to check it out after Yan's ballet class.

Booths were set up by the various organisations, such as AStar, NUS, Science Centre. They provide the public, especially the children, a chance to pick up science concepts through interactive and hands-on experience. Among those we learnt were:

1. How the corn starch shares similar properties to a bullet proof armour due to its ability to turn hard upon impact and stay fluid when there's no impact.

2. How red cabbage juice acts like litmus paper and is able to tell acidity from alkalinity

3. How various chemicals can be mixed together to make scents of strawberry/soursop/banana

4. How to make slime using Borax solution and PVA

I must say I learnt quite a bit during that 1.5 hour.

Rui's birthday party at Labrador Park

We celebrated Rui's 6th birthday at Labrador Park. Despite our initial apprehension due to the unpredictable weather, it was perfect weather that day. Sunny, but not too hot and no rain at all.

The theme was Yellow (Rui's fave colour). Everyone (yes everyone!) turned up dressed in that hue. Thanks for being so sporting!

We started with the usual makan session. Food included fried bee hoon, fried rice and chicken wings prepared by Auntie Yayu as well as various dim sum items from a stall in the market.

The kids were then treated to a round of carnival games. They tried their hand at "Fishing Game", "Toss the Ring Game" and "Toss the Ball in the hole Game". At each successful attempt, they collected token coins with which they can swap for prizes. Thanks Aunt Winnie for preparing the token coins!

The party ended with the cake cutting , of course!

Parent-Teacher Meet

We went for the girls' Parent-Teacher Meet yesterday.

The glowing reports given by the teachers were the best birthday presents I could ever receive. No diamonds or pearls can up that.

About Rui -
1. She's doing well academically. She can do better in her hanyu pinyin with more practice but she's generally very interested to learn new things.

2. She gets along very well with her peers and doesn't choose her friends. She doesn't insist on being the leader aka she's not bossy.

3. The teacher asked if Rui is attending any speech and drama class and I said no. She then commented that Rui can usually improvise in her performance without instructions from the teacher. I told her I was the same when I was younger.

4. She has her own mind and will ask when she needs help, without any fear. She also has her own system of doing things and is systematic in approaching her school work and problems.

5. She's K-poh, which means she will ask what the adults are talking about even though it doesn't concern her. That's from me again.

6. She loves art and craft and can complete her craft work with minimal guidance.

7. She is usually one of the first to finish her work and she will help friends who are slower.

About Yan -
1. The teachers said that Yan is among the best students in her class.

2. She is serious about her work and will strive to complete her work without much facilitation. Even when she is presented with easier alternatives, she will choose to do the harder way on her own. She'll even ask for more work!

3. Even though she's on half day programme, the English teacher ropes her in on speech and drama programmes and character for life programmes as she doesn't want Yan to miss out. She's going to act as the wife in the Purple Turnip, a skit put up by the N2 class this Friday.

4. She's able to communicate with the Chinese teacher almost entirely in Mandarin. She's able to learn all her chinese songs and repeat them.

5. She has her own mind on things and has strong self-reliant skills.

I hope I don't sound like I am boasting but I am very proud of my 2 girls indeed!

Home made mobile

While we were out buying cakes from K Ki (driven by a sudden craving to eat good cakes), Rui and Aunt Yayu made a mobile using wooden chopsticks, twine and plastic animals won at a recent carnival that we went to, and hung it to the ceiling light in Rui's room. What a great way to recycle!

O mio babbino caro

One of Aunt E's friend has a daughter who is a really gifted soprano singer. She's undergoing voice coaching and has won a prize at a recent competition singing this famous opera piece "O mio babbino caro". She's only 9!

She was "forced" to perform for us the night we had barbeque and we were all touched by her performance. Aunt F even shedded tears!

After that night, that piece of music was just ringing in my ears constantly. I searched youtube and found this version, which I thought was the best one. Many others have sung this piece, but Sissel's version appealed to me most.

So here it is. Take a listen.

Community Club

We are CC-converts (Community Club converts).

I am taking pop guitar class at a nearby CC while Rui is taking her art classes there. The fees are very reasonable. Guitar classes cost me $80 for 10 sessions while art classes are at $50 for 12 lessons.

Rui just attended her first art class this afternoon. I thought her artwork was amazing! She described the entire process to me and even I was enthralled.

First the teacher helped her with the outline of the potatoes.
Next she had to choose the hairstyle, hat, limbs and facial expressions that she wanted and she had to draw them. (I guess that means the teacher had drawn on the board several options to choose from).
She then had to colour and outline the picture.

She enjoyed herself tremendously and even said to us that other bigger jie-jies took a look at her picture and commented that it was very nice. She scored 80/100 for the first piece of work!

We made it!

Finally got the letter in the mail!

DIY Art II

We attempted another art and craft work yesterday afternoon with Hay and Yu. We went to Art Friend to get the necessary.

We bought
1. 4 wooden spoons (these will be the body of the puppet we are making)
2. Felt material (these will make the clothing)

We also got some wool from Aunt XF. These will form the hair.

The rest are sourced from our kitchen and existing art accessories at home, like beans, pasta, paints.

Making the puppets was a little challenging for the kids. The adults had to help along the way. The kids had fun nevertheless, dabbling with the paints, messing up the table, sticking decorative accessories on the puppets.

DIY Art Lesson

Rui has been bugging us to send her to art class. We did a trial one at Turf City at $40 per session. Quite steep for a 1 hour session I must say. But the after products looked fantastic and the girls had great fun.

However, as we could not find a good time slot to fit in regular art classes, we convinced her that her papa will be her art teacher instead and we will do art lessons at home every weekend. To prove to her (and ourselves) that we are serious about this, Ben and Rui went to Art Friend to purchase the complete set of acryllic paints, paintbrushes, drawing blocks, pencils and other accessories.

We had our first DIY art lesson last Sunday. Here's the result of the first lesson. Not too bad eh?

Art Garden

Singapore Art Museum @8Q is holding a very interesting children's event, Art Garden, in conjunction with Children's Season at the Museums. For $10 per adult, you get to bring the children in for free, to see the various displays and get to learn concepts such as symmetry, colour combinations, plant life cycles in an interactive way.

We enjoyed ourselves so much we may go back again one of these days. Maybe on a Friday evening when adults get to go in for free too!
